"How to Be More Optimistic" by Susan Shain (NY Times, 2020-02-18) offers four ways to look more hopefully at the world:
- Visualize your best possible self – imagine an ideal, idyllic future
- Accept the inevitability of disappointment – remember that "many of the negative things we predict never actually happen"
- Argue against yourself – counter negative self-talk with positive logic and reasons to expect improvement
- Put things in perspective – to balance worst-case scenarios with best-case ones, maximally good outcomes
